Board Game Night VI

Migo warned me about bringing light(card & no bulky container) games for our session last night. I don't feel like bring too much stuffs so I just brought Citadels, No Thanks and Bohnanza.

They were all card games. No thanks was 1st played last session. The girls were really enjoying how fast the game is. For the first time, the record was broken. I wasn't crowned the Empress. Melinda got the crown. Grace also broke the lowest score of 5 to 3, of which I hold the title. Last night, I was hoping I could snatched the crown from Melinda. We all are. But Melinda proved to be a brave Empress. After 2 games, she managed to kept the crown. Well, there's always a next time, right girls?!

We didn't have the chance to play Citadels. Though I'm a little sad, we couldn't play everything, part of me seems happy for I'm still the Citadel's Empress. And for the record, I have yet to lose playing it. :D

Bohnanza was our new game for the night. I was a little hesitant to teach them how to play it because I only played it twice. It doesn't even count because the rules are not the same for 2 and more people. And didn't I mentioned I hate reading manuals?! The things I learned about the earlier games all came from Migo. He's always the one who learns the game first. But I don't have a choice. Playing Bohnanza twice was quite enjoyable and challenging so I couldn't make a pass by waiting for him to join our session and teach us. 

I'm glad we played it,  not because I was crowned the Empress again, but because I feel that they are enjoying it as much as I do. Sharing the same feelings of enjoyment towards a game is always intoxicating. I love it when we like the same thing. The clamor for dominance makes our board game nights more exciting! :)

It was a holy Wednesday. Since there was no work the next day, it's OK to stay late. And late it was.

There were 4 games of Carcassone and 3 for Ticket to Ride. It was the first time Carcassone was played, due to unfamiliarity there were aberrations during the game. Following are some aberrations:

1. A player keep changing the placement of her tiles even if the next player is already in play. (Wanna guess who this is?!)

2. The resulting maps were gross. There were many blank tiles.

3. A game takes too long. Usually, a game of Carcassone can be done in 30 minutes. 

Despite the  aberrations , the night is still hilariously fun. Everybody wants to win but not as much as some people do. In gaming, it is always a surprise what people do just to get there.

An RFTG+AL Session (BG-VI)

We had our 6th board game session last March, 24 at Migo's residence. I don't know if it was fortunate or unfortunate that only 1 player showed up, Victor. 

I wasn't up to gaming because I got tired of an earlier activity. I begged not to participate but Migo won't let me. I had no choice but to drag myself out of bed.

Migo asked Victor what he would like to play. He picked RFTG (Race for the Galaxy). Migo said it was a nice pick so that Victor's memories of the game will be recovered. He forgot the rules the last time he played with Migo and PJ.

As for me, I have developed a liking to RFTG already. It's no longer a problem playing it. Still, the confidence of being able to teach others about it is low. It took me about 5 games just to understand what I'm doing...a lot more to finally able to build my strategy...and a lot, lot more to be able to win. So you see, it'd be pretty hard to let others warm up to RFTG yet. I still lack the skills to convince them that it's worth the headache. Haha!

The first game was challenging. It was a comeback game for Victor. He won with a score of 52 with Earth's Lost Colony as the starting world and using Blue strategy. Migo came in second scoring 45 with Alpha Centauri as starting world. With a point less than Migo, I came in last with New Sparta as the starting world.

I don't want to accept my defeat so we had another match. I won at 35 points. Victor came in second with 31 points. Migo at 27 points. Later, I was in awe when I realized that I was using Victor's starting planet and his strategy from the 1st game. Because I win, I taunted Migo for losing. Migo wanted another match.

We reached 5 rounds of RFTG. Each round, we decided to use different starting world. Following are the details of each.

Migo and I won twice. Victor won once. 

After RFTG, we decided to play another game. I picked Alien Frontiers. For me, AL is a game that can be matched to RFTG. Playing them requires extra effort. These games make you think a lot. They are such challenging games.

Victor and I tied at 8 points. Migo got 7 points. I wanted to play another round of AL but since I had funrun the next day, I choose to retire early. It was a fun session still despite the number of attendees. Haha! 

Thanks to Victor for playing with us. The 3 of us is still the perfect attendance players. Hehehe!

Board Game Wednesdays I

Finally, the girls have their first board game night at CoffeeCat eBloc yesterday. They have fun playing Ticket To Ride 1910 for 3 rounds. The session started at 8:00 PM and ended around 11:00 PM. The attendees were Kring, Melinda, Grace, Charry and Peter.

First game for Melinda and Peter with TTR. First game for all with 1910 expansion.

Kring played red. Melinda played blue. Peter played black. Green and yellow for Grace and Charry, respectively. 

The game was pretty tight. Charry was deducted 17 points for not completing her destination ticket, San Francisco to Sault Marie. She was blocked by Grace and Peter. Kring was deducted 2 points for forgetting to complete her destination ticket, Vancouver to Portland.

Melinda won for the over-all score of 105 but since Kring won by 1 point (Melinda's total destination ticket: 36 points) in the destination tickets (37 points), she got an additional 15 points added to her over-all score of 98. 

Updates: The Globe Trotter card additional points can only be added to the player completing the most tickets, not with the most points on tickets.

Game 2-3

Melinda and Peter had other things to do so they left after the 1st game. Grace, Kring and Charry finished 2 rounds together. The girls switch colors for luck. Being bad luck at yellow for the 1st game, Charry opted to use red - winning color of the first round. Kring used the always losing color - yellow (I'm sure Albert would agree because he always use this color. Haha!). Grace picked blue.

The girls are consistent despite the change of colors. Kring won. Grace came 2nd. Charry is still out of luck which can be attributed to the 2 uncompleted destination tickets.

Session V Report

Playing board games - that's how we spent our first Sunday of March. And it was a time well-spent. :)

We played 8 games and there were 10 people who joined the fun. Grace, a close friend at work joined us for the first time. I'm super happy she accepted my request. I'm exhilarated when she texted me that she had so much fun and will join again next time. Yohooo! The more, the merrier!

We had the session at Kesner's place again. This was the 2nd session held at their place. Thanks to them for the yummy diner of lechon manok and liempo. The rest of us chipped in PHP 100 for the drinks, ngohiong, fish and pork belly. Games plus foods...hmmm...if this would continue every Sunday, then might as well make my exercise regimen rigid..or else...you know what I mean. Haha!

Our board gaming activity has been active since the start of 2012. Fortunately, we just had our 5th session last Saturday. Wohooo! I’ve been lazy for the past days that I was not able to post something about each session. I’ll make up for the lost times by summarizing the events of the past 5 sessions. Weeee!

Budding Collection

It's been a while since my last post. Lots of things happened since. Yay! As of this post, collection includes 10 board games already. Ain't that handful for board game newbies? Blame it to his addiction.  I could not blame him. I wish you could not blame him too. :)

Last Saturday, he is quite excited to introduce his new treasures, Wits & Wagers and Survive - collection batch 4.  See the look on his face?! Warning: Board Gaming is pretty addictive. Don't commit if you're not ready. Haha!

I remembered blabbering about the 2nd batch. It was christmas holidays when he received the 3rd batch so I wasn't able to blog about it.

Citadels and Robo Rally comprises collection batch 3. Migo got it from Dice Tower's secret Santa gift exchange.

Citadels is quite hard. I played it twice but don't understand what I'm doing still. It's thanks to beginner's luck for winning on the 2nd try. Put your hands together please. :D

Robo Rally is vicious. Waaaaaaaah! I love and hate it at the same time. I hate it because it magnifies my sense of direction weakness. I'm having a hard time knowing the left and right side of my robot. It's frustrating to strategize  on such vantage. Hayst! I love it because it is excruciatingly FUN. It can accommodate up to 8 players which makes it more fun. And it's blood pumping to play it with a crowd of 8 hyperactive and vicious people. Hahaha!  Don't you just love a game like that?!!

Of the batch 3 collection, I like Robo Rally more. But playing it is time-consuming thus we opt not to play it more often that we wanted to.  Perhaps, if our group grow (we have 8 on-off players now) then probably we can play this more. Just message me if you like to join the fun, alright?!

And now back to batch 4. I cannot say much probably considering I just met them last Saturday.

Survive. Played it thrice. Lose. Lose. Win! Yay! I'm not at my best here yet because I still cannot form my strategy. I still need to familiarize the icons. I don't like the game so much. Haha! As its name suggest, maybe you already have an idea what's this game about...and (as you may now) I'm not a fan of survival. Haha! But I'm in it for the win. Let's see how I'll survive Survive on out next sessions. Stay tuned!

I hate to always be the odd one out so I might stop playing this. Just kidding! Why would I stop?! To hell with being the odd one. Haha! Welcome batch 2!

After a long wait, Migo’s package was finally delivered last Friday. Since his excitement overwhelmed me, I just had to postpone our laag to make way for a game session.

The package like the batch 1 has 3 games, which makes Migo’s collection into 6. The games were Ticket to Ride, Last Night on Earth and Race to the Galaxy. The boxes of Ticket to Ride and Last Night on Earth had the same size, while the box of Race to the Galaxy is the same as the box of Carcassone of batch 1.

Migo invited some friends to welcome batch 2. But before that, he wants us to understand and play them first. I promised him that I should be the one to read the game setup of Ticket to Ride but it didn’t happen. I was happy that because of his excitement, he did it himself. Beginner’s luck was on me for I win the first game of Ticket to Ride.

The next target is Last Night on Earth. We were not able to play the game as planned because Migo had a hard time getting the feel of the game because he hasn’t slept yet.

When our friends arrived, we had the 1^st game of Last Night on Earth. Migo plays the zombie role. PJ, Dhunve and I play the heroes. I play 2 heroes, the Sheriff and Sally. PJ plays Father John. Dhunve plays Johnny. For this game, the ideal setup would be to have 1 zombie player and 4 hero player. Since PJ had some errands to do, Victor assumes his role. We played the scenario “Die Zombies! Die”. The game play is that the zombie and the heroes will fight each other. Heroes won if they can kill 15 zombies. Zombies won if they can kill 2 heroes. There is a sundown tracker too, heroes lose if the tracker will reached maximum. Zombies won in this game which can be attributed to Migo’s superb ability in handling dice which most of us suck.

The next game was Ticket to Ride. Migo won the game with a whooping score of 155. I got 100. Dhunve got 99. Victor lost with 56 points due to some 30 points deduction for not completing his tickets.

We had dinner at Siomayan sa Tisa after. When we came back, we played Carcassone. It was Dhunve’s first time. PJ won the game. Victor lost again. After the game, Dhunve left.

We played Ticket to Ride again for PJ’s sake. And beginner's luck was on him. Booo! I forgot who lose. I think it’s still Victor. Hmmmm!

PJ wants to play Last Night on Earth since he wasn’t able to finish the first game. This time he takes the zombie role. Victor, Migo and I play the heroes. We won because of PJ’s ultimate failure at handling dice. Yahooo!

The next game was still Last Night on Earth since Victor wanted to play the zombie this time. I was sleepy that I asked Migo to play my hero.  

By morning, Migo told me that after the game with Victor as zombie, PJ and he played Race to the Galaxy four times. He won thrice. PJ won once. Victor was sleeping soundly by this time.  They left at around 6 AM.

I have yet to play Race to the Galaxy maybe soon because Migo really wants me to try. I’m contented with not knowing how to play it though because I really feel it would be difficult. Hmmmm!
